Chapter 8

Death’s Touch

“Only when you embrace Death, will you understand Life.”

T he air was filled with the aroma of chemicals and smoke. Nathan reached up and touched his face. How long was he out? He sat up and looked around. His body was sore, but he felt rested. The light from the candles and small fires danced around the room, but no one was there. He listened closely to see if he could hear anyone, but all he heard was the hiss from the chemicals. With great effort, he rose to his feet and walked towards the store room. He looked inside, but it was empty aside from the countless objects stored on the shelves. He turned around and walked out into the hallway. The alchemist's hall was eerily vacant of people. Where was Jen? His heart began to pound, and he grabbed his chest. His chest was freezing cold. He pulled his shirt up and saw the black circle. Memories flooded his mind, reminding him of what happened. He went to the northern lake and met the cloaked rider Death. The circle was etched into the floor but was now etched into him.

"Hello?" he yelled out, hoping to hear a reply. The candles lining the hallways were still lit so there must be someone here. He didn't hear a reply, so he walked down the hallway and turned the corner. Jake was sitting on the floor resting in the main hall.

"Jake!" Nathan exclaimed as he walked up to him.

"Nathan! What are you doing walking around?" Jake jumped to his feet and approached Nathan.

"I feel fine. Where is everyone?"

"They're in the dorm. It's still early. The sun hasn't risen yet and Gideon didn't think you'd be awake until later."

"So, he does sleep." Nathan joked.

"I don't know about that. He might have formulas written on the inside of his eyelids he studies at night."

Both of them began to laugh.

"He mentioned that if you awoke before he did to go fetch him immediately. Let's go see if he's sleeping or if he's up waiting for us like he usually is."

Jake helped Nathan walk down a side hallway toward the dorms. As they approached, they saw Jen step out from a doorway.

"Nathan!" Jen said as she ran up to them and took Nathan's right arm, helping to carry him. "What are you doing?"

"I asked the same thing! He doesn't appear to be as bad off as everyone thought he was," said Jake.

"As bad as everyone thought? Did you guys think I died or something?"

"Well, you said you met Death," Jake replied with a smirk.

"Well, I did. As for what I'm doing, I woke up and didn't see anyone. I was worried that something happened, so I came to find out."

"Gideon thought it best for us to get some rest. Jake stayed watch in the main hall since it's the only way to access the research area."

With the help of Jen and Jake, Nathan stumbled into one of the dorm rooms. It was like every other room in the guildhall but was furnished with chairs and small beds.
